Spirit Squad


The ASU Spirit Squad, which includes the Sun Devil Dance Team and Spirit Leaders, is part of the ASU Sun Devil Marching Band. It is a prestigious organization created to promote school spirit and interest in college activities, and perform and support athletic programs. Members have the opportunity to sharpen dance technique, develop positive personal character, and provide quality, family entertainment for large audiences.

To be a part of the Spirit Squad (Dance Team or Spirit Leaders), you must fill out an application separate from the Gold Form (ASU Sun Devil Marching Band application). You must also audition the spring prior to performing. Filll out the Spirit Squad-Dance and Spirit Squad-Cheer Application and Tryout Packet.

Subj: Spring tryouts for the Sun Devil Marching Band

Following ASU’s current policy on social distancing and Covid-19, we have officially cancelled all on-campus live auditions originally schedule for April or May for your individual sections.  We will be posting information and criteria for Virtual Tryouts for Dance Team, Spirit Leaders-Cheer, Colorguard and Leadership Interviews.  Drumline placements will be done as in previous years at Band Camp in August. 

We will be utilizing the following dates for Dance Team, Spirit Leaders-Cheer, and Colorguard Virtual Tryouts:

March 30th: Instructions for our virtual tryout process are posted.  Application packets will also be made available.

April 17th: Application packets and headshot scanned pdf copy due to sundevilband@gmail.com

Audition routine videos will be made available via Google Drive.

May 1: Virtual Tryout You Tube Videos are due, sent to sundevilband@gmail.com (please make this an unlisted video so it can be shared among our staff without permissions, which will delay the process)

May 15: First-round decisions will be emailed to the applicants.

If a second round of tryouts are deemed needed by our judges, those routines will be made available as needed.

June 1:  Invitations to Band Camp will be sent to those receiving call-backs from the first two rounds of the auditions.

Final placement for all teams will take place the first two days of Band Camps. Dance Team, Spirit Leaders and Colorguard will begin Monday, August 10th, 11th and join the band regular schedule on August 12th

*those students who are living on campus, the band office has opened-up housing beginning August 10th, please make sure you fill out the GOLD FORM, for the band office to make sure you get on the list so you won’t be charged the early move in fee. Gold Form

The Gold Form is the official application for the ASU Sun Devil Marching Band Band Office. All members, regardless of section, must complete this form by the date indicated to be considered for the marching season.

Community Fee/Registration

Each member will be required to pay the fee of $350.00 in order to participate in the Sun Devil Marching Band.  You can pay this fee only online through the our automatied system.  Link will be made avialable in June. 

*once you fill out the form you will be contacted by the leadership choosen in late April to answer any questions you might have as well as be your guide to getting ready for the season.  Leadership will distrubute the music for placement auditions.  The Band Office will assign times for the morning of Wednesday, August 12th, when we start band camp.
